Grieving / Dying / Elderly Loved Ones

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

9. Grieving Dying Elderly Loved Ones

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4 (NIV)

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.” — Psalm 116:15 (NIV)

Grief and loss are some of the hardest roads we walk — and yet, even here, God draws close. The pain of saying goodbye to someone we love deeply is real, but so is the love that carries them home to the Lord. To walk our elderly loved ones to the gates of heaven, to hold their hand as they take their final steps into eternity, is one of the greatest acts of love we can give. It is love that eases fear, love that brings peace, and love that reminds them they will not walk alone.

For those who remain, there is purpose even in the pain of loss. Grief teaches us how precious life is, how powerful love can be, and how faithful God is to His promises. Every tear shed becomes a prayer, every memory shared becomes a testimony, and every step forward becomes evidence of His strength within us.

Prayers in these seasons matter. They bring peace to the dying, comfort to the grieving, strength to caregivers, and hope to hearts that feel broken. A custom prayer written for these moments can guide a family’s words when their own are too heavy to find. It can become a lasting reminder that while loss changes our lives, love endures, and faith assures us that we will meet again.

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV): “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

There is great honor in praying with someone who is nearing the end of their earthly life. A prayer spoken at the bedside becomes more than words — it becomes a companion for their soul, helping to release fears and open their heart to the peace of God’s presence. When we hold their hand, speak love, and remind them that heaven is waiting, we give them courage to let go and run into the arms of the Lord.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses…” (Hebrews 12:1) reminds us that those who have gone before us are not lost, but present — part of that great gathering in heaven, ready to welcome us home.

When my father was dying, I held his hand and told him what to look for, and that when he saw it, he could let my hand go and run home through those heavenly gates. When my mother was dying, I prayed that all those she loved would be waiting for her. The night before she passed, she opened her eyes, looked to the side, and said, “I see everyone.”

These holy moments remind us that death is not the end — it is a doorway. Praying with our loved ones as they cross through that doorway is both an honor and a blessing. It brings peace to them, comfort to us, and a holy assurance that love does not end — it simply carries on into eternity.
